Sen no Rikyu is considered the father of chanoyu, the Japanese "Way of Tea". He was the key figure in bringing in key aspects to the traditional matcha tea ceremony such as simplicity, honesty, and directness. From Sen no Rikyu descended three houses: Urasenke, Omotesenke, and Mushakojisenke. These three houses continue to this day to pass down the teachings of Rikyu in the art of chanoyu.
